My friend got roofied. He was mouthing off against homosexuality during Pride Week in a bar in a well-known West Coast city. After three drinks he was slurring heavily and acting strange, then ran away from the group and wasn’t seen for the rest of the night. He doesn’t remember much. This is not normal for him at all. Well, except for the mouthing off part.
When this story started, I thought it was going to be about Hothead getting into a fight and going to jail, so I was nonplussed. “He’s so stupid,” said the narrator, another good friend. “What was he thinking? He should never have been saying that.”
Wait, what? No.
I’m sorry, but no. That may have been my instinctive reaction if there had been a fight, but what we have here is rape culture at its glorious best. This is a serious, criminal act, committed out of pure malice, and “he should have kept his mouth shut” is not the correct response. (No offense, good friend/narrator, if you’re reading this.) “Yes, but.” No. Stop and think about what you’re saying. This isn’t Nazi Germany where if you say the non-agenda thing out loud a guard comes along and puts weird drugs in you.
A few more observations:
I really wish Catholics would stop pretending like being “gay” is somehow the same as being straight, only you have to stay celibate forever. It is a serious sexual perversion to which some people are unfortunately tempted. Vice is vice is vice, and darn me if I don’t think sexual deviancy is a bit worse than some other things. Yes, God loves those with same-sex attraction tendencies in the same way he loves those with anger problems, only nobody (or hardly anyone) pretends that we should treat angry, violent people with velvet-gloved tolerance. We’re frightened of illicit anger because unchecked, it will devolve, like any other vice, into chaos, pain and ruin for everyone touched by it. This is what vice does. It perverts the soul. It leads to criminal and dehumanizing acts, and yes, I do think that, and yes, I also think that “heteronormative” promiscuity and widespread contraception do the same thing. I think that all together they create rape culture and a society that kills babies and old people.
I also think that those who don’t vaccinate their children are responsible for breaking down immunity and endangering their fellow citizens. Ripple effect. No man, woman, child, right-wing-libertarian, left-wing-pro-homosexual hipster or anti-everything hippy is an island.
Rape culture can hurt men, but not in the way its apologists like to claim—that talking about it makes everyone think all men are rapists. No one thinks that. No one thinks all pro-homosexual activists are rapists, either. I don’t. But what is going on here? We’ve created a society where people walk around with roofies in their pockets and the reaction is “Try not to piss those people off.” Stand up if you think this is wacked.
